Homages to Hand-Pressed Type

I found this among an unsorted pile of saved bookmarks:

Loss of roots in design

That commentary, along with this short movie, points to the tactile nature of physically setting type and what that feels like and teaches the designer.

Good stuff.

new layout in the works

Spent a good part of the day doodling a new layout. I want a third column, but I want it to be this funky thing--hard to explain--so I was trying different ways of doing it. Nothing solid to show yet.

Hey! Check out The Weekly Amuser

The author and I are still tweaking the design, but check out The Weekly Amuser.

This is my first custom design for a fellow TypePad user.

Promised screenshot

/wild/2003/10/nw_screen.jpg Here's the screenshot of the author site I've been working on. Still changes to make, but it gives an idea of the overall look.

Demo launched

Well I coded and coded and coded and designed and designed and designed. And I uploaded the demo for an important client website an hour under deadline. Whew! When I get through a pile of work I've been neglecting on behalf of this project, I'll try to post some screenshots. I'm very pleased with it.

How would you like your menu?

I'm working on a site design for a client who is also a friend. I want it to be perfect, of course.

This must be why I designed three menus: one pure css, one hybrid, and one traditional dhtml. All had some issues in older browsers, but the main difficulty is that she's an author with a lot of books to brag about--in other words, a lot of links on the front page.

I'm still not satisfied that even with the dhtml menu I have the clean look I want. I did come up with two textured backgrounds that really capture the mood of the books.

I'm still at the drawing board, as working-demo day approaches, rapidly.
